Not only is the African-American vote an important one -- such as in South Carolina's Democratic primary, where about half the voters are black -- but African-Americans also have proven adept at voting for the Democratic nominee since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Al Gore won the black vote in the 2000 Democratic primary, as did John Kerry in 2004.

The African-Americans surveyed named the Iraq war, health care and the economy as the most pressing issues facing America, mirroring the concerns of most Democrats. "Issues that concern African-Americans are the issues that concern most Americans," Clayton said. "People are concerned about war, people are concerned about jobs."
